Kids, families enjoy food, prizes at National Night Out

Jul 31, 2023

Gunner Cherry, 10, left, and Asher Bayhurst, 4, hang out in a police cruiser Tuesday night during National Night Out in Corry City Park. The event is meant to foster positive relationships between the police force and the community.

Members of the Corry community were invited Tuesday to Corry City Park for a fun evening on the town with firefighters, police officers, public works employees and a slew of other organizations during National Night Out.

Vicki Gates estimated that roughly 250 to 300 people showed up, which is a little lower than last year, with an estimated 400 attendees. Going a bit further back, the number was 500 in 2021.

Those who turned up to this year’s event got to explore trucks and machinery, visit with first responders and go around to different booths and collect information about churches, nonprofits and other area organizations.

Gates said there were 40 vendors present, and Corry Moose Lodge 98 fingerprinted 20 kids. Last year, there were 42 groups there, a big leap from 25 in 2021.

Besides free hot dogs, chips and water being handed out, there were also drawings for prizes in different age groups.

In the 4-and-under age group, the winners were Ariana Murphy, pink dinosaur backpack; Kara Lawson-Henry, Paw Patrol backpack; Karsyn Gillihan, splash pad; Jax Weed, police tent; Audrey Kurtz, purple scooter; and Ethan Huff, blue scooter.

For ages 5 to 11, there were Genevieve Bedow, mermaid backpack; Ridge Palczer, dinosaur backpack; Emily Lindsey, volleyball; Hunter Walton, basketball; Lilly Roach, teal hoverboard; and Emmitt Roach, black hoverboard.

Winners for the 12-to-16 age category were Olivya (last name withheld), gray Under Armour backpack; Aaryn Mulvehill, actical backpack; Jocelyn Miles and Jarrod Middletown, Walmart gift cards; Eric Hidum and Danielle Socoski, camp chairs.

The adult prizes (ages 17 and up) went to: Kaden Moline and Debbie Gillihan, Country Fair gift cards; Bentlee Day, Sander’s gift card; Kenny Cooney, solar lights; and Lucas Hull, charcoal grill.

Sponsors and corporate donors for the event included Bracken Funeral Home, Corry Collision Center, Corry Federal Credit Union, Humes Ford of Corry, Corry Higher Education Council, Corry Jamestown Credit Union, True Value Corry Lumber, Corry Walmart, Country Fair, Doleski & Wolford Orthodontics and Dynasty Construction Unlimited Inc.

Also, Green Mountain Electric, J.H. Auto, Little Annie’s, Painted Finch Gallery, Rossbacher Insurance Group, Sander’s Markets and Subway.
